Tasmanian students inspired by maths
Yesterday the CHOOSEMATHS team along with four of our careers ambassadors headed south to the North-West coast of Tasmania to encourage young women to consider a career in maths. A small town in Tasmania, Burnie and in particular Hellyer College is the Year 11 & 12 option for students all over the Western region of the state.
The careers event brought together over 130 Year 10 and 11 girls from seven feeder high schools and our ambassadors certainly didn’t disappoint. Principal Judith Fahey attesting that the students were so inspired by some of the stories of the speakers that she even had a small contingent at her door in the afternoon asking for more information – a wonderful result.
At the end of the day, one of our speakers Ally Watson, Co-Founder of organisation Code Like a Girl asked the audience ‘who here today has been inspired to think about a career option that they may not have considered before?’ With 50% of the girls raising their hands, the event certainly had some impact.
Thank you to the staff and students at Hellyer College who were instrumental in organising the day. We hope to work with you again in the future.
