AMSI Celebrates Australian Return of Global Maths Event
The Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI) is among many celebrating news Sydney will host the International Congress of Mathematics Education (ICME) in 2024.
The successful bid was announced by the Federal and New South Wales Governments in early July. The first time Australia has hosted in four decades, the event will showcase the best of the nation’s mathematical sciences and Indigenous mathematics.
The Institute was one of eight Australian mathematics groups who collaborated as the Consortium for Mathematics Education (CoME) to secure hosting rights. AMSI Schools Program Manager and Choose Maths Project Director Janine Sprakel, who represented AMSI on the Consortium, said it was a fantastic outcome for Australia and for New South Wales.
“This has been a significant effort of many from across Australia’s mathematics community. We are excited to shine a light on Australian mathematics, particularly the uniqueness of indigenous maths practices that have been in use for thousands of years,” she said.
Congratulating everyone involved, AMSI Director Professor Tim Brown said the Institute joined fellow Consortium members in thanking the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction (ICMI) for awarding Australia ICME 2024 hosting rights.
“This will be a sensational celebration of both the global mathematics community and Australia’s mathematical sciences and education. AMSI is delighted to be able to play a role in bringing this event to Sydney,” said AMSI Director Professor Brown.
The event was last held in Australia in 1984, kickstarting the careers of many world-class mathematicians, teachers and mathematics educators across the country. It is hoped it will again prove a springboard for new talent.
